KUALA LUMPUR, 15 AUGUST, 2011: Pan-Malaysia Islamic Party (PAS) vice president Datuk Mahfuz Omar told a press conference today that he is unaware of PAS Youth’s stand on the recent raid conducted by the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) at the Damansara Utama Methodist Church (DUMC) over a week ago.
Last Tuesday, the party’s youth wing expressed their support for Jais action in conducting the raid on DUMC last Wednesday night which contradicts the views from the PAS’ senior leaders and also Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim who had expressed regret over the incident. PAS youth chief Nasrudin Hassan Tantawi said after a meeting with Datuk Hasan Ali here that if the purpose of the raid was to ensure the faith of Muslims then it is a rightful and noble act and should be supported. However, Mahfuz refused to comment further on the issue saying that he is not holding the press conference to question that matter.
Commenting about the central leadership’s stand on the issue, Mahfuz said that they have to wait for Jais to finish its investigation as they do not know all the facts. PAS’ central leadership had earlier called up Selangor executive councilor Datuk Dr Hasan Ali soon after the church raid to demand explanation from Hasan who broke ranks with the Pakatan Rakyat pact when he defended Jais for its actions against the DUMC.
