KUALA LUMPUR: DAP national deputy chairman Dr Tan Seng Giaw said the implementation of hudud is impossible in Malaysia.
When contacted Dr Tan stressed the fact that even if Pas wins in the next general election, it still needs a two-thirds majority in Parliament to amend the constitution for hudud to be implemented.
“You have to tell me how are we going to get the two-thirds majority for that? This includes the support from Sabah and Sarawak as well.”
“It is impossible,” he added.
Dr Tan made this comment following a series of outbursts by Pas, insisting on the implementation of hudud, with the latest from its spiritual leader Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat who on Wednesday said Pas would definitely implement hudud law although there were objections to this, including from DAP.
Nik Aziz reportedly said: "I don't think I should mention this the second time, as it (the proposal) had been made a long time ago and everybody knows about it."
When asked whether Pas’ position in Pakatan Rakyat will be reviewed due to its firm stance on hudud, Dr Tan said: “I don’t think we have to do anything about it.”
“I mean DAP and Pas had expressed the same view about it for the past thirty years. I don’t think Karpal Singh (DAP chairman) and Nik Aziz have changed their stance.”
Dr Tan who is the Kepong MP agreed that both parties are at loggerhead when it comes to this issue said: “As we have said numerous times, we agree to disagree. That is all.”
He reiterated that Pakatan Rakyat will work within its consensus as stated in the Buku Jingga, a framework policy of the coalition.
Thus Dr Tan stressed: “Pakatan Rakyat has nothing to do with hudud.”
Dr Tan believed the hudud issue was brought up again by rivalling party Barisan Nasional for the upcoming general election.
While Dr Tan is pointing finger at Barisan for raising the hudud issue again, it was the recent spat between Karpal and Pas youth chief Nasrudin Hassan Tantawi that had revived the debate on the hudud.
It led to PKR youth leader Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin joining the fray and he chose to oppose Pas' hudud aspiration.
In a news report Shamsul was quoted as saying that it is improper for Nasrudin to raise the hudud issue again when the collective stand of Pakatan on hudud was made clear during their meeting last year.
Dr Tan said: "This issue should stop because both parties have made its stand clear for the longest time."
“What good will it bring to the nation if we keep having the same talk on this matter?” he asked.
